Nine years ago, Adam Freeman and Terry Kemp began broadcasting Harrison High School athletic events. Their wheelhouse sport? Football. In that time, they have become a well-respected team with an innate ability to bring sports to life in the minds of thousands of fans.
Adam Freeman has always been involved in sports. Growing up, his world was filled with many a baseball and basketball game, which galvanized his love for competition. As he got older, he realized he had a special ability to explain what was going on in a game to people that weren’t watching it.
“I have always had the ability and imagination to create a picture in my head of what is going on and how I would want to be told about the event taking place. I once called an entire imaginary Braves vs. Dodgers game to entertain a bus full of my buddies while on a 6-hour ride from Munich to Vienna in the summer of 1989. I was 17 years old. Sounds weird but I could see every at bat, every throw to first, every pitch and every call by the umpire in my head. All I had to do was tell them what I saw in my head.”
In 2016, this ability to bring a sporting event to life through words finally became a reality as Freeman embarked on what he thought was going to be a nice addition to the Harrison High School sports landscape. He decided to record his play-by-play calls of a Harrison vs East Paulding football game and then post the recording for people to listen to later. It wasn’t live on the air broadcasting, but it was a start; a start of something really big. This was the birth of HNS Broadcasting, “Broadcasting was always something I wanted to do. I started recording the broadcasts because I wanted to reconnect with sports. Up until 2015, I had been the head athletic trainer at Harrison for 18 years. I was going to every home sporting event, all year long. I was burned out, so I took a year off. I didn't go to a single game. During that year, I regained my passion for high school athletics. I missed it.” Two games into those recorded broadcasts, Freeman realized he wanted some help. Another set of eyes to aid in “painting the picture” to the audience would be a great addition. So, the natural thing to do was ask a friend to join the team. Freeman asked his good friend Terry Kemp if he would like to join.
Like Freeman, Terry Kemp’s life was shaped and guided by sports. Basketball and football were his two primary sports with a little baseball sprinkled in here and there. So, talking about them also came easy to him, or so he thought.
“I grew up listening to Larry Munson on Saturdays. He was the only way to experience University of Georgia football, and even Atlanta Falcons football for a short time. So, I thought replicating what he did for years would be easy. NOPE! Play by play is not easy. Adam is great at it and that’s why I do the color. I’m watching everything else that’s going on while Adam is laser focused on the play itself. Together, we try to bring the full picture into focus for the listener.”
Freeman echoes those points as well.
“My goal is to put every listener in the seat right next to me in the booth. To put them on the front row in the crowd or make them feel like they are on the sidelines. The more detail I can include in my description of the plays and environment they will be able to easily feel the game".
With hundreds of broadcasts under their belt the duo has decided the time to expand their audience is now. The result of that expansion is HNS Radio.
Stay tuned…..
